Featured in Cloudways Hosting Round Up

It’s always a pleasure to contribute to articles about services we use regularly or test into. I was recently asked to provide thoughts about the hosting platform, Cloudways.

What Is Cloudways?

Cloudways is a hosting platform that allows its users to choose from a variety of hosting services and manage them directly within one platform. Users can choose from Digital Ocean (our preferred web hosting partner), Amazon Web Services, Google, Vultr and more. The choices give web developers plenty of options depending on requirements from a client. Conversely, something like WPEngine is only meant for hosting WordPress-powered websites.

My Rating of Cloudways

While I enjoy using Cloudways as our hosting platform for all of our various client sites, it does have a couple of drawbacks.

Requires a Learning Curve

There is a definite learning curve to using the platform. If you’re new to web development and web hosting altogether, it’s not the right choice for you. You will need to know how to set up a server, install SSL certificates, connect domains via A records, troubleshoot common server issues and more. It gives us the flexibility with a fully managed server, but it’s definitely not as easy to use as a service like GoDaddy, BlueHost, Host Gator, etc.

Customer Support Is Lacking

Cloudways’ support is located overseas so there can occasionally be a language barrier. Additionally, most of the support experts will point users to a knowledgebase article rather than providing direct assistance. While some answers can be quickly found in the expansive knowledgebase, you may have a unique situation that requires an expert’s help. You’ll need to chat back and forth, and may even have to request a senior support technician to help resolve your issue.

Would I Recommend Cloudways for Web Hosting?

100%! It’s a great platform and just takes a little bit of getting used to be able to use it. Once we started moving client sites to our Digital Ocean servers via Cloudways, it’s been a breeze. From setting up a server to diagnosing specific application issues, the platform is filled with useful tools most web developers will appreciate. kjtkj
